Writer/Artist friends of Buffalo! Submit!

I’ve begun a stint as a bi-weekly blogger about music for Buffalo Spree. I am satisfied with my first update, though I feel this is still a shot over the bow of what I really want to write. So stay tuned, won’t you? Also, one of these days I’ll explain exactly how much I get lost in everything Okkervil River does, and hopefully not to Will Sheff’s face. Read the rest of the article here.
And watch the video for “Tin Man” by Future Islands, and the video for Titus Andronicus’ “No Future Part Three: Escape From No Future”, both of which should give you a great idea of what to expect from these bands.
Here’s a random collection of thoughts for the day, that seem so relevant.
- DCFC has a new album out next week, and I heard it all on NPR’s All Songs Considered. Also, at first blush, I’m liking it.
- A friend of mine asked me if I listen to TV on the Radio today, and I almost fell over. Its the weirdest thing when most of my friends shrug their shoulders to that band, or don’t care for them. Am I missing something? I know they are. It felt great to be excitedly blabbing off the top of my head over “Wolf Like Me” with her.
- I’ve decided to make a Playlist (which is the fancy way of saying a Mix Tape, when you don’t have cassettes anymore) with a theme of Dangerous. It’s going to include “Wolf Like Me”, and it’ll also include the Dear Leader’s “Nightmare Alleys” which is my current favorite song. Aaron Perrino could be my Paul Westerberg.
- Speaking of PW, and All Songs Considered: they’ve got the whole Our Concert Could Be Your Life show streaming on their site. You can listen straight through or pick and choose your artists. Titus Andronicus does a commendable job covering The ‘Mats amongst the many other artists who performed. I’m listening to Dan Deacon’s set now. And, might I add, still reading the book, which I started over a year ago. I’m catching up with a lot of things.
It has been raining on and off all day. I have a scene in a short story that explores part of the experience of not doing what you’d like to be doing and not knowing why you’re not accomplishing what you know you should be. The difference is, I know why I haven’t gotten to edit this short yet: I’ve got a live event to shoot tomorrow, and since I’m heading to Austin on Tuesday. Maybe on the plane I’ll be able to review and refresh. I hope I can get to it before then.
Tomorrow is going to be fun, and worth all the stress. In the long term, will it be worth interrupting my writing? Perhaps. I’m worried about not being able to jump right back into my writing, into my editing, to be where I was when I was writing every day. I need that. I found out some lovely info about myself again. Writing not only calms me down, but evens me out, clears my head, and makes me happier. I want to do more of it, and to write every day, regardless of the films or music I’m recording.
Maybe I should take a cue from Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. I do carry a notebook around, but I use it for notes, not for writing and drawing, simply because it isn’t big enough, and my handwriting isn’t that great. Maybe I need to rethink this, and maybe I need to refresh myself over at 43 Folders and review my GTD book. Maybe I’ll even develop better handwriting. Maybe.
